I understand that payment for a full share of Harman's Farm Market CSA entitles me to a weekly box of fruits and vegetables grown and harvested at Harman's Farm and /or Colora Orchards, our local partnering farm.  Payment for a bi-weekly half share entitles me to a full share every other week.  Payment for a weekly half share entitles me to a half share every week.  Additional items such as cheese, ice cream, eggs, pork, beef and honey from other Harford County farms may also be included.  I understand that my payment is nonrefundable and that I will share in the risks of the growing season with the farmers.  It is my responsibility to pick up my share at the designated time or to contact Harman's Farm market to make other arrangements.  If I, or a designated person, cannot pick up my share within 24 hours of my assigned day, I understand that my share will be donated elsewhere.

What is Community Supported Agriculture?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a mutually beneficial relationship between farmers and the community.  Participants buy a "share of the harvest" in advance of the growing season in exchange for produce when it is ready.  This relationship guarantees small farmers a secure market for their produce and minimizes the risks involved in farming.  It serves its "members" by providing them a box of the very freshest, locally grown produce each week.  Members know that they have purchased their produce directly from that farmer, which helps to ensure the viablity of the farm, aid in the preservation of farm ground and help the local economy.  Members also have the assurance that their food is safe and fresh.  members are also assuming some of the risks involved in farming, such as weather related events that prevent a crop from being harvested.  Please keep in mind though that in over 20 years of farming, Harman's Farm has never had a total season wiped out.

Harman's Farm Market CSA

Harman's Farm Market offers the option of a CSA membership to its customers.  Members pay in advance and can anticipate receiving a box of vegetables and fruits valued between $20 - $25 each week.  The season will begin approximately the 3rd week in May and run through the end of October.  There will be between 6 to 10 items (units) per box, depending on the value of the produce.  The units in the box will vary according to the season.  Examples of a unit could be:  6 ears of corn, 1 pound of green beans, 3-4 zuchhini, 1 quart of strawberries, 3-4 tomatoes, or a cantaloupe.  In addtion to receiving produce grown on our farm, your share may also include peaches or apples from our trusted farm partner, Colora orchards in Cecil County, as well as eggs from Andy's Eggs, honey from Cybee's honey, cheese and ice cream from Keye's Creamery, pork from Woolsey Farm, and pork or beef from Deer Meadow Farm.  Of course, these are all local farms which we support and hope you will, too.  Shown below are a few examples of a full share from last year's CSA:

Early Season:  2 qts. strawberries, 1 qt. sugar snap peas, 6 squash, 1 bag lettuce, 1 bunch bok choy, 1 large bunch broccoli, 1 dozen eggs

Mid-Season:  1 doz. corn, 1 cantaloupe, 3 onions, 5 peaches, 3 cucumbers, 1 1/2 lb. green beans, 4 tomatoes, 2 green bell peppers

Late Season:  1/2 doz. corn, 4-5 tomatoes, 1 1/2 lb. green beans, 5-6 apples, 3 sweet onions, 1 butternut squash, 1/2 gallon cider, 1 block cheese

The pick-up location for our CSA is Harman's Farm Market.  Pick-ups will be each week on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, as agreed upon, from 11:00 to 5:30.  If for some reason you are not able to make the pick-up time some week, please ask a friend or relative to help out.  If a member's share is not picked up within 24 hours of the scheduled time,  the food will be donated to the local food bank.

This growing season was wonderful for the corn and green beans.  I don't remember having a better crop of corn in years.  The cool, wet spring, early summer, and early fall were challenging for the vine crops, but they pulled through with some help from the farmer (Tom).  Many farms east of the Mississippi experienced Late Blight on their tomatoes, but we took precautions and were able to avoid the devastating disease.

I enjoyed my many school groups this October, with smiles and the sound of laughter lighting up the straw maze and the pumpkin patch.  Unfortunately, October weekends were very soggy and wagon rides to the pumpkin patch were in short supply.  But our customers were very accomodating and had a good time picking their pumpkins out of the market.

Now it is time to clean up, both the market and the fields.  Oh, and my house which has been neglected for months is looking forward to a good bailing out.  Tom will be doing maintenance work on the tractors and other equipment, the strawberries will get their winter blankets, and I will be catching up with much paper work that was shoved aside during the summer.  Oh...and the boys will enjoy some family time with mom and dad!

Many of you know that we grow red and YELLOW seedless watermelon.  Yes, that’s right, yellow watermelon.  They are very similar to a red, but just a different  color inside.  Ask Daniel, and he will tell you that his favorite watermelon is yellow.  They are sweet and juicy, and quench your thirst on these hot summer days.

Go ahead and be daring.  Try a yellow watermelon!

Like most of our crops, we make many succession plantings throughout the spring and summer to ensure that we will have vegetables the entire season.  But I must say that corn wins hands down for the number of plantings; approximately 19.  Tom starts planting corn around the third week of March and keeps planting every week into July.  He has just finished planting the corn for Labor Day weekend (that's always a big planting).  The first several plantings of corn are covered with clear plastic that acts like a greenhouse to keep it warm.  Otherwise, the cold March and April days and nights would not allow the seed to germinate, and if it did, a frost could kill it.  By planting this early under plastic, we are able to have our first corn by late June.

Our first corn started tasseling June 9th, and we usually plan on the first picking around 20 days from tassel - give or take a few days.  The pictures show the first planting and notice the ears.  The silk on the ears is white now, but when the corn is ready to pull, the silk will be brown.  Now the trick is to keep the deer and raccoons out of the corn so that we can enjoy it!!

But, then the rain came, and came and came.  And when it wasn't raining, the mornings were very dewey.  This is not good for berries, and to add insult to injury, it got warm.  We continued to pick, but it became more difficult as the rainy days continued.  Finally, after sticking my fingers in 10 mushy berries in order to find one good one, I decided that it was time to move on to other endeavors. 

But in every cloud, there is a silver lining.  All of the rain and warm weather has given us the best corn crop that I have seen in many years.  We can't wait until the end of June when we start pulling corn.  We hope to see you then!
